Composition color keys

Exploring a bunch of colors in a composition sketch I made last week. I wanted to try a day/light scene as well as dark scenes to see what worked best. Waiting on the schoolism critique now and then I'll take one to a finish.

Composition sketches

I did some composition sketches to start of the last few weeks of my schoolism class. One of these is going to be rendered fully and in color over the next two weeks. So keep a look out for that.

In the meantime I've practically finished my freelance job so I will have more time for this and some more studies.
Quite happy with how this came out. Teacher was very pleased with them too :)

Icy landing

So it's been awhile since I posted. I've been very busy with a bunch of projects among which the schoolism class. This is my week 5 assignment. Something I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Might come back to touch it up later.

I hope to post some of the freelance work I've been doing soon. 

Environment design week 2

So I'm turning in my assignment for this week early since I will be out of town for a while.
The assignment was to take images that I feel work really well and simplify it into a simple and clear statement using only three values (shades of grey). I'm pretty happy with what I came up with!

Environment design

2013 studies
It has been awhile since I posted, been very busy and took some time off. Last week I started my second Schoolism class by the master painter Nathan fowkes. I'm absolutely excited about it and always get really happy learning from him. We started off by doing some studies again so I thought  I'd compare them with last years studies. Take a look!


2014 studies

I'm taking the next week off to give waterpainting a try. If that fails I'll do some studies on my tablet.

Spent some more time on this gladiator piece.

I currently have three weeks off work and my freelance work has been finished for now. So more time to draw :)

Also starting a new schoolism class next week! I'm really excited!

Some quick doodles in between

So I'm working on a lot of 'freelance' stuff designing characters, props, posters and magazine pages. Felt like doing some of my own drawing in between. Needed to do some loose stuff.

Calm your heart

The concept of a man comforting a woman and calming her heart is one of the most beautiful things to me.
Made this inspired by a recent event and a scene from Spartacus. Love how it turned out even though the colors got really tricky. I'm not completely satisfied with some point so I will probably get back to changing this.

Bonan the traveller

About time! A more detailed piece. I've been wanting to do one for quite a while now and just didn't have time. Of all the sketches that I did lately this is the one I chose to detail. I feel like I have learned a bit more about natural colors instead of my usual saturated color schemes. Hope you like it!

No studies this time. Composition sketches! I'm wanted to work on a more detailed piece and was trying out some ideas.

Quickstudies #11

Time for more studies! I´ve been very busy (and somewhat distracted) with other projects and commissions. Many of which I can't show. I'm working on a more detailed piece which requires some research and a stronger base, so that's coming up.
For those with sharp eyes; I have been trying a little bit of impressionistic brushwork. Will develop this more as I go. Love the dynamic it brings

Quickstudies #10

Got back to doing quick study drawings. These are studies from still at www.whatthemovie.com. Decided to number this since it´s an often re-occurring thing. I've been doing a bunch of client work and I'm also working on some collaborations. Maybe I can show them on my blog soon. For now these 2 studies.

Website, freelance jobs and some old stuff

So a bunch of things today!
First: I launched my website:















It's a simple first welcome to people that see my art. Along with this blog and my deviantart page

Second, I've been doing some client work and I might get more soon (which is always nice). One of which is just finished today. It's for an internal magazine I help create at work. 

 And the last thing for today, I found some old drawings that I never posted. I think the concepts are nice but I never really finished them or got them how I wanted to.

The drawing lady

Was going to do a couple of quick warm up sketches but I liked how this went so much I spent a little more time on it. Now I'm running behind on other things haha. Gotta love subsurface scattering. (light that bounces inside and back out of the skin and showing the color of blood vessels)  Makes for such vivid paintings!

Oh and by the way, for the people that click on the pictures;
I paint them fairly small so I don't really look at the
 details that much, so there is no added value to zooming/clicking. :) 

I love silhouets

So I decided to do a couple of silhouet painting. All within the limit of 30 minutes.

All of the above paintings are made up of simple shapes, simple colors and it's mostly about the composition. That didn't work with this desert storm situation. The first time I started I went into the cloudy, chaotic feeling of it immediately instead of focusing on the simple shapes like earlier. So I started over and I'm happy with it now.

Finished character designs

Finished the character designs I started last time. The amount of detail is not optimal since I stopped working on it when the idea was clear to me. It seemed excessive to detail them all. Might pick one to detail out later but this will do for now.

Learned a pretty decent amount about the difference between detailed fully rendered outfit and just the general idea and a basic shape character. There is a limit to what looks right. Trying to add a bit of detail looks muddy and weird really fast. Either go all the way or leave it simple. 

Character designs

Working on the character designs I was talking about on the last post. I've decided on a level of detail and laid the groundwork for the rest. This means selection masks, and workable line-art. Up next is values/clothing texture, then color and after that the touching up. 

Contrast studies

Here are some more 'in-between' studies I did.
I'm working on some character/costume design and I'm having trouble getting to a degree of detail I like. Still in the works!

Agnes Obel

Zorro!

Saw the mask of zorro again last week and forgot how much I loved this movie. Did some quick studies. Up next: Character design!
