Quickstudies #17

Did I ever mention I love stage lighting? Because I love stage lighting. Quick one from a concert I attended by Patrick Watson

Elegance

Todays quickpaint. Done in about 1.5 hours.
Nice to get back to painting fast and loose again after some detailed asset work I did last week.

I will probably work on this more to get the full amount of detail out of the face. No more time for that today.

Helena

Finally finished this one. Helena.
Based on a character in dark souls 2 I used to play with.

A short while back I did a study on a destiny character with an existing lighting situation. I then took what I learned from that and made this from the ground up.

I realized I need to study folds and cloth more. The complicity of multi directional lighting makes this tricky but with a decent set-up and focused lighting it's very well manageable.

Really happy with the results. Felt like I learned here.

Works in progress

Some stuff I'm working on. Neither of these is finished so I'll get back to them.

This one is a piece for a friend that got out of hand. I got lost in the lighting and contrast and I'm gonna let this sit for a bit and get back to it fresh.

This one is an experimentation with 3D software and perspective. The details are coming along but I'm not sure what to do to enhance the depth feeling. Also will get back to this.

A character from a game I like to sporadically play. There's a lot of creative freedom in this and it looks nothing like my character anymore but I like this more so that's good :)

Composition page

Did a bunch of composition sketches quite a while back now. I still like them

There is something about working in values alone. You don't have to worry about color, - which can get complicated quickly. And if the value system works, most of the drawing will follow.

Destiny Hunter

Began starting to draw the characters I play as in games. Starting off with destiny.
Up next is probably my friends character and then Dark souls 2

Ghosts of the forest

While working on a piece I disabled some layers and this came up. Pretty cool!
Will bea full piece next time I post it. No ghosts :)

Quickstudy #15

Some more warming up quickpaints. First of a few planned this week.

Lineart practice

Working on my lineart skills. Both are still works in progress but I like where they're going.

This time around I spend relatively more time on pure lineart which is a good way to lay a good foundation.
I get little patterns and details right from the get-go so I can calculate that in when starting coloring and shading.

Basement joy

Trying out my cartoony style painting. Ended up with partly realistic one.

I didn't plan on doing a background but I wanted to work on this more. I liked the pose and I felt it needed a bit of a homely feel to it. Hence this weird circular basement type room.

So this took me a while, used some textures and redid the background completely at some point because the perspective was off.

Quickstudies #14

Some more quickpaints. This time featuring Boromir from Lord of the rings, Geralt of Rivia from the Witcher series and some other thing I have no idea about :)

Yegh I can do better than this. Not my week

Friend portrait

Just a quick painting I did for a friend of mine.
Wasn't very hard. once I got the basic shapes down it was just finetuning the expressions and little details on the eyes nose and mouth.

Currently working on something bigger that's intended for my portfolio. Going in a bit of a cartoony happier style than I'm used to so I'm experimenting a bit.

Ryse, son of Rome

Made for a dear friend of mine. Inspired by Ryse: son of Rome (videogame)

Learned a bunch about armor reflections and soft/hard contrasts.
I do realise I need to work on my own basic line art skills. I've been doing a lot of studies as of late.

Quickstudies #13

Getting back to quickpaints after a busy time working on forest heart. 30 minutes each. Happy to see some progress here :)
Edit: added this one. Took about an hour
And this one. For a friends birthday. This one took longer. Got stuck on the hair for a bit. About 4 hours

Forest heart concepts and paintover

Over the past months I've been working on a game called forest heart. The work I do for it is often internal and I can't show it around. Yesterday we had a promotional update and these paintings of mine were used. Happy to finally show some of it.

I can't say much more about what is going on since that hasn't been made public yet.
More about the game here and here

A kids trust

Finished dragon age inquisition last week and was inspired by some of the landscapes. Decided to study it and it got out of hand. Worked on it more and more until I was happy with it. Trees!
 Different version

Match 3 redesign

Got an assessment from a game studio to redesign a game for them.
I had 5 days to crank out a new design for one of their old match 3 games. This is what I ended up with.

Waffles!

Gamehouse assignment

So I got this assignment from Gamehouse two weeks back. (Hi guys from Gamehouse!)
Since it's a bit of a departure from what style I usually have I figured it'd be good to document the steps I took to get there.

First piece is a loading scene. Wherein the game could load and set a scene at the same time.
1. preliminary sketches. Trying to figure out what pose works best for what is asked. It's a scene with a customer and a shopkeeper fitting clothes. With this sketch I thought it was focused too much on the thing that looks like a tail. (was trying to create a unique piece of clothing)
2. I changed the pose to the customer holding her dress and looking at it a bit unsure. Also starting to play with values.
3. Adding color. At this step I realised I wasn't going to get the style I wanted with this technique. This is something I often use to get started.
4. Lowered the opacity on what I had, started sketching over it with simple shapes. Something I should have started with.
5. Colors and values right off the bat. No silly layering, Had some issues getting the eyes right since it's something I've never done before. Also notice the face of the shopkeeper is pretty meh.
6. Here I start to add proper shading and a background. I also changed the shopkeepers shoes to be a bit more glamourous.
7. Added lighting effects, detail and textures. I quite like how this all turned out.

Another piece they asked for was a gameplay scene. A fashion store.
1. This is my first sketch/mood piece. I was aiming for a morning sunlight type of deal. Very simple and much much too small. I was thinking of a bridal shop at first which is really intimate. But I figured that wouldn't support their gameplay. So I expanded it and added a bunch more.  Also it was too dark. Their games are really saturated and colorful.
2. Switched around with furniture and when I was happy with that added simple shapes to it all. Notice that I kept the idea I had at the beginning. This is my base. No lighting or details yet.
3. Adding lighting and more detail. More background stuff
4. Adding clothing, things to sell and I started texturing some.
5. Adding even more detail, little things, textures and finishing the look. This is the full picture. Hopefully a place people would spend a lot of game time in.

Long piece of text this time. Hope it's appreciated nonetheless :)
